My name is Daniel “Danny” Frey. I am a Swiss citizen who has lived in South Africa for more than 10 years. I speak Swiss-German, German and English. I offer guided trails through the indigenous forests and along the coast of the Tsitsikamma. These walks can be tailor made to suit your needs or simply join me on one of my standard routes.
You can walk for an hour or for a day. You can experience the beauty of the fynbos, the splendour of the forest or the power of water on the coast. Hike down into the spectacular Storms River gorge and discover how nature, over millions of years, formed this natural marvel. Find out how the intricate forest eco-system functions and how it is both threatened and protected by man.
With a bit of luck you may see one of the forest mammals or one of the forest birds such as the Knysna Loerie. Visit ancient elephant trails and follow in their footsteps through mountains and ravines. Learn about the fascinating geology and history of the Tsitsikamma. Find out how the clash of different cultures ultimately resulted in the New South Africa.

THE FOLLOWING TRAILS ARE AVAILABLE:
1. Indigenous Forest, ancient elephant trail and old Storms River Pass.
Approx. 2 hours.

On this pleasant and very easy walk we will get to know some trees of the indigenous forest.
While we follow the old Storms River National Road built by Thomas Bain in the 1880’s, we are going to hear the story of the elephants and of the first inhabitants of this wilderness of the Tsitsikamma. Then we follow the long gone sounds of the Woodcutters and of the road builders to encounter the ancient elephant trails. On our walk back we have enough time to talk about the people and animals that inhabit this region in present days.

2. Stormsriver Gorge, ancient elephant trail and old Storms River Pass.
Approx. 3 hours.

This longer walk along the gravel road built by Thomas Bain will bring us all the way down into the Storms River gorge. We are going to have a look at the first passage of the Storms River at a time when the ox wagon was the only means of transport. On our way there we might be lucky and encounter some bushbuck or other forest mammals. While we are talking about ancient history I will show you some trees that have been here since that history took place. We will see where the road builders placed their pickaxes into the rock to build this road in the 1880’s. We return at a leisurely pace – giving you the chance to feast your eyes and fill your senses with the sounds, the silence, the smells and the splendour of this magnificent forest and experience it with a deeper understanding and appreciation.

3. Waterfall Hike in Tsitsikamma National Park.
Approx. 4 hours.

We follow the first three kilometers of the world famous Otter Trail to get to the waterfall. On our walk we might see Dolphins, Whales, Cormorants or Dassies. We talk about the coastal geology so that we understand how this coastline came to be. Along the coast the fauna and flora is different to the forest one even so only a few hundred metres separate them from each other. This is a strenuous walk and I only recommend it to people with a certain degree of fitness. In addition or as an alternative we can do the boardwalk to the Suspension Bridge at the Storms River Mouth which is a fairly easy walk.

4. Big Tree, Stormsriver Bridge, Tsitsikamma National Park. Suspension Bridge Walk and Loerie Walk. Whole day trip.

We meet at the Info Centre at the entrance to Stormsriver Village or if you are staying in the village I meet you at your guest house or hotel. Using your car we drive to the different places where we get to know the splendours of God’s created nature. I will tell you about South African history, the Garden Route history, the relationship between the indigenous forests and men, geology and how the first inhabitants lived in these forests. While we are walking in the forest and along the coast line, we will be at all time on the lookout for animals and birds to see and learn more about their place in our beautiful world.

I will personally guide each trail, sharing information and knowledge I have gained over more than 10 years living in South Africa.
You will dictate the pace of walking and how much information you require…
